Position: Teacher Aide
The Hornell City is a rural community that offers a strong public school system with a wide variety of sports and educational activities year round. We are nestled in the beautiful Canisteo Valley of Upstate New York, also known as the Finger Lakes Region. Hornell is located south of Interstate 390, just off State Route 36. The city is a short drive from many tourist highlights such as Letchworth State Park, also known as “The Grand Canyon of the East”, The Corning Museum of Glass, and Swain Ski Center.
The work involves responsibility for assisting teachers in the performance of their duties by performing a wide variety of non-professional tasks associated with the teaching process. The work is carried out in accordance with strictly defined procedures as assigned and directed by a certified teacher and involves relieving a teacher of that part of their duties, which while related to the teaching process, can be performed by non-certified personnel. The duties of this class differ from those of School Monitor due to the more complex nature of the assignments, which are performed, and the more direct relation of these duties to the teaching process. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a certified teacher, but with some leeway allowed the incumbent for the exercise of independent judgment in the performance of those tasks, which are routine and/or clearly defined. Typical work activities may include:
Assists in overseeing the technical operations of computer-aided instruction and language labs, and assists students in the use of the specialized equipment involved;
Performs a variety of clerical duties for one or several teachers such as typing test and study materials from teacher drafts, types letters to parents from the teacher concerning their child’s status, need for conferencing, may schedule meetings for teachers;
Dependent upon grade or age level of student, may monitor student activity in other than the educational process e.g.. oversee students during play activities;
Helps to set up science laboratory equipment and conduct experiments, and performs limited review of student laboratory reports;
Attends to the special needs of pupils with handicapping conditions and/or learning disabilities;
Assists in the technical preparation and production of audio-visual programs;
Prepares visual teaching aides for use by teachers during instruction;
Reads in a foreign language from prepared scripts for tape recording purposes;
Provides piano, violin, or other musical accompaniment;
Proctors and otherwise helps in the conduct of examinations;
May assist teachers in correcting test papers, recording grades, maintaining files, and preparing statistical reports; and
Other related duties and responsibilities as may be assigned.
Applicants are required to meet Steuben County Civil Service requirements and have either two years of higher education or a passing score on the NYS Assessment of Teaching Assistant Skills Exam (NYS ATAS).
